In this session, participants will learn:

  • The privacy law implications of different types of background checks, including reference checks, social media checks, criminal record checks, credit checks, and more.
  • How human rights concerns can arise in these types of background checks.

Facilitator
Preston Parsons is an associate lawyer at Overholt Law and practices in the firm's core business of labour, employment, and human rights law.  Preston takes great care in advising both employers and employees with an emphasis on taking proactive steps to avoid problems and disputes from arising wherever possible.  Preston has experienced a wide breadth of legal practice and procedure and has appeared in both British Columbia Supreme Court and Provincial Court for employment litigation and advocacy, mediations, and more.  He has also appeared at the BC Labour Relations Board, BC Human Rights Tribunal and in federal labour arbitration proceedings.  He has summered, articled, and practiced in downtown Vancouver since 2009, first at a large regional firm and later at a boutique class action litigation form.  He has worked on some of the largest and most complex legal cases in Canada, an experience which makes him well suited to the management of his clients' files.

How to Register

Every person attending this webinar must be registered (and paid for) individually.

IMPORTANT: Registering someone other than yourself? If you are a member and are registering someone else to attend the event, DO NOT log into the site to register. If the other person is a member, they must log in using their own member ID and password and register that way. The registration deadline is 12 noon on Thursday, February 1, 2018.  Please note that registrations are not possible after online registration has closed.

Payment Terms

Payment is due within 30 days of registration or by the registration deadline of February 1, 2018 (whichever is earlier). Payments may be made conveniently online by Visa/Mastercard at the time of registration or by cheque received by the registration deadline. Cheques must be received within 30 days of registration or by February 1 (whichever is earlier) by CPHR Nova Scotia at 84 Chain Lake Drive, Suite 103, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2. Registrations January 24th or later must be paid by Visa/MC at time of registration.

If paying online by Visa or Mastercard, you must have the billing address exactly as it appears on the credit card statement or the transaction will be declined. This is a security feature for your protection.

 

Cancellation Policy

A full refund, less a $40+HST processing fee, will be issued for cancellations received in writing by January 25th at 12:00 noon. Those who make reservations and do not attend will still be required to pay for the full session fee. Cancellations received by CPHR Nova Scotia in writing by 12 noon on January 25, 2018 will only be charged the processing fee. Substitutions are permitted if received by February 2at 12:00 noon (for substitutions, the registrant must advise our office of their replacement in writing by 12 noon on February 2nd including the full name, email and phone number of the substitution). Member/non-member rates will be applied to the substitutions. This cancellation policy applies regardless of date of registration. Registrations after the cancellation deadline are non-refundable.
