Conciliation and Mediation Services (CMS) is a neutral third party organization working to help labour-management groups change the conversation.  They are a division of the Department of Labour and Advanced Education with a vision of harmonious working relationships and industrial peace in Nova Scotia.  They have a suite of free-of-charge services to work towards this vision, which also saves employers and unions considerable time and money.

Join us for this one hour session which will walk participants through what Conciliation and Mediation Services is and the range of services they offer to unionized workplaces.  For participants in this session, they will be focussing on how participants can build a better working relationship with their union and unionized employees while saving time, and the organization money by utilizing the services at CMS.  In particular, attendees will learn:

Learning Objectives:

  • The benefits of joint training with management and unionized staff and which modules CMS has available, including communications, conflict resolution, grievance handling, and labour-management committee best practices, among others;
  • The benefits of grievance mediation as compared to arbitration, how to access this CMS service, and what the process entails;
  • How to address an acute conflict in the workplace, through bringing in CMS as a neutral third party to coach individuals involved in the conflict; and
  • The details of the division's legislated functions, such as first agreement orientations and conciliations.
