The Science of Unconscious Bias Part A
In this session you will be introduced to unconscious bias and how it impacts your everyday life. Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one's tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing. Our unconscious bias is often incompatible with one's conscious values.
Speaker: Shakira Weatherdon, a respected trainer with nearly a decade of experience in sexualized violence, equity and inclusion. She provides provide subject matter expertise and leads the implementation of equity-related programs and services at Nova Scotia Community College as the Equity and Inclusion Consultant. Supporting organizations to create safer, more welcoming, and inclusive environments is her passion. Shakira received her MA in Gender and Peacebuilding from the United Nations mandated University for Peace and her Honors Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Development Studies from the University of Toronto
