Damage Awards in Wrongful Dismissal Cases

Bryna Hatt, Fraser Hatt Law

Bryna is the founding partner of Fraser Hatt Law. She is dedicated to providing clients with professional and timely service. She understands that clients' needs and issues are time sensitive and require a strategic and knowledgeable approach the first time.  It is with this view, she has built strong and trusting relationships with her clients. 

Bryna is an experienced negotiator. She also has significant litigation experience, appearing before all levels of the Nova Scotia Courts, labour boards, administrative tribunals and arbitrations. 

She is also a Certified Workplace Investigator, and is an appointed Adjudicator of the Nova Scotia Small Claims Court. She has also taught Business Law at St. Francis Xavier University, in the Schwartz School of Business. 

 

Assessing Credibility in Workplace Investigations

Julie MacPhee, Patterson Law

A member of Labour and Employment team where she assists clients who find themselves in a dispute, Julie MacPhee is also a certified workplace investigator and conducts independent workplace investigations and workplace assessments. Whatever the area, Julie listens carefully to understand the client’s needs and develop tailor-made strategies for success. Julie’s background in science speaks to her detail-oriented approach and her analytical skills, both of which are important tools in helping clients identify the sometimes hidden issues driving the dispute.

Julie has represented clients at arbitrations, mediation-arbitrations, mediations, Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal, Utility and Review Board, Nova Scotia Assessment Appeal Tribunal, Human Rights Board of Inquiry, and the Labour Board. She has also represented clients before the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, Nova Scotia Supreme Court, Provincial Court, Family Court and Small Claims Court. She’s as comfortable getting results for clients in the Courtroom, as out.


Mandatory Vaccination Policies

Ian Parker, LaFosse MacLeod

Ian has a general practice with a focus on litigation.  He is lead counsel for a number of institutional clients, and provides assistance with employment, property, commercial, and general litigation matters. A large percentage of Ian’s practice is working with insurance companies in personal injury matters; though he also does plaintiff’s personal injury work.

Ian has experience arguing at all levels of court in Nova Scotia, including Provincial Court, Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeal; he also has experience arguing at administrative hearings. He brings a client centred approach to the practice of law and prides himself on responsive, efficient and effective legal work.

 

Employee Sick Time – When is Enough, Enough?

Michelle Lahey, Lafosse MacLeod

Michelle has experience appearing before Small Claims Court, the Nova Scotia Provincial Court, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. Her practice is diverse, and includes corporate and commercial law, criminal defence, estate planning, real estate, and labour and employment.

Outside of the office, Michelle is an instructor in Cape Breton University's School of Arts and Social Science. She also serves on a number of boards including: Talbot House and the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design. She regularly volunteers for the Free Legal Clinic located at the Sydney courthouse.

 

Workplace Sexual Harassment: All You Need to Know

Andrea Rizzato - Sheldon Nathanson Law

Andrea has a special interest and experience in the areas of Labour and Employment Law. Andrea also has extensive experience in Family Law, as well as experience in the following areas of practice: Property Law, Civil Litigation, Wills & Estates and Bankruptcy & Insolvency.

Andrea completed her Bachelor of Laws at Dalhousie University. She articled with Sheldon Nathanson Law in 2004, and has been practising with the firm ever since.
