Description

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is a comprehensive international framework that outlines the collective and individual rights of Indigenous peoples around the world. Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 UNDRIP seeks to address historical injustices and provide a platform for the protection and promotion of indigenous rights, cultures, languages, lands, and resources. It emphasizes principles of self-determination, cultural preservation, and meaningful participation in decisions that affect indigenous communities. 

On June 21, 2021, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act received Royal Assent in Canada and came into force. This Act provides a roadmap for the Government of Canada and First Nations, Inuit and Métis to work together to implement the UN Declaration based on lasting reconciliation, healing and cooperative relations.
