Management of attendance issues in the workplace can present a variety of challenges.  This session will cover issues related to attendance management in both unionized and non-unionized workplaces, including implementation of policies, human rights challenges, termination for non-culpable absenteeism, and frustration of contract.

About the Facilitator

Sandra Guarascio is a partner at Roper Greyell and practices in all areas of employment and labour law, with a particular interest in human rights issues. She has been recognized by her peers and has been listed in Best Lawyers International, Canada since 2013. She works with public and private sector employers, providing strategic and proactive advice for unionized and non-unionized environments, which includes representation as counsel, hiring and termination issues, workplace investigations and audits, policy development and training tailored to the needs of clients.

Sandra has conducted numerous workplace investigations into allegations of discrimination and harassment including in highly sensitive circumstances and in complex workplaces. With an emphasis on problem solving, Sandra has also designed and conducted workplace audits for employers. She also provides strategic advice to employers in addressing issues related to discrimination and workplace harassment and in the handling of formal complaints provincially and federally.

Sandra is an experienced facilitator and speaker, and has conducted numerous workshops dealing with management issues, discrimination, accommodation, and workplace harassment and bullying. She is an instructor with the National Institute of Disability Management and Research, now the Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Services, and has been a guest lecturer at BCIT. She is also a volunteer with the Law Society and Continuing Legal Education, serving as co-chair of the annual CLE Human Rights Conference.

 

Michael Kilgallin provides strategic advice to employers in labour relations, employment, privacy and human rights issues. He has appeared as counsel before the Labour Relations Board, Human Rights Tribunal, Employment Standards Tribunal, Arbitration panels and the British Columbia Courts. In addition, Michael provides training for employers on a wide variety of workplace topics and is available to conduct workplace investigations.

Michael obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from U.B.C. and a law degree from Dalhousie University. After articling at a large national firm, Michael was called to the B.C. Bar in 2006 and joined Roper Greyell that same year. Outside of work Michael enjoys time with his young family and is an outdoor enthusiast with specific interests in skiing and travel.

IMPORTANT: Registering someone other than yourself?  If you are a member and are registering someone else to attend the event, DO NOT log into the site to register.  If the other person is a member, they must log in using their own member ID and password and register that way.  If the other person is not a member, do not log in, just register them from the public area of the website.  Registrations must be done online.

The registration deadline is 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 1, 2015.  Please note that registrations are not possible after online registration has closed.  

Important note: both registration and payment are required for every person attending this webinar.

Payment Terms

Payment is due within 30 days of registration or by the registration deadline of April 1, 2015 (whichever is earlier).  Payments may be made conveniently online by Visa/Mastercard at the time of registration or by cheque received by the registration deadline.  Cheques must be received within 30 days of registration or by April 1 (whichever is earlier) by HRANS at 84 Chain Lake Drive, Suite 103, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2.  Registrations March 20th or later must be paid by Visa/MC at time of registration.

If paying online by Visa or Mastercard, you must have the billing address exactly as it appears on the credit card statement or the transaction will be declined.  This is a security feature for your protection.

 

Cancellation Policy

A full refund, less a $25+HST administration fee, will be issued for cancellations received in writing prior to Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 12:00noon. Those who make reservations and do not attend will still be required to pay for the full session fee.  Cancellations received by HRANS in writing prior to noon on Thursday, March 26, 2015 will only be charged the administration fee.  Substitutions are permitted if received by April 8 at 12 noon (for substitutions, the registrant must advise our office of their replacement in writing by 12 noon on April 8th including the full name, email and phone number of the substitution).  Member/non-member rates will be applied to the substitutions.  This cancellation policy applies regardless of date of registration.  Registrations after the cancellation deadline are non-refundable.
