Hidden Talent - Canadian Armed Forces Reservists

There are close to 2000 Canadian Armed Forces reservists working part-time for the military across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, in communities as diverse as Yarmouth, Sydney, Halifax, and Summerside.  Many of these reservists also maintain full-time civilian jobs.  Many may not have identified themselves to their employer, yet as an employer there are obligations under the Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island Labour Standards Codes.  Please join Colonel Alex MacDonald as he explains the hidden talent in our community (and perhaps in your workforce), explore financial incentive programs and review relevant legislation, as well as, a number of programs designed to assist both employers and reservists.

In this session, participants will learn about:

  • Relevant legislation relating to granting time off for reservists
  • A new program delivered by Service Canada designed to financially compensate employers for granting time off to reservists for operations
  • Hidden talent and skills reservists bring to their civilian employer

About the Presenter
Colonel Alex MacDonald has had a dual career path in business and as an Army Reservist for the past 25 years.  In business, his expertise has been in customer service and call centre operations, working for such brands as Scotiabank, Rogers and Convergys.  For the past eight years, he has been Vice President of the Halifax Office of Admiral Insurance, a UK automobile insurer with 5000 staff worldwide, of which 425 employees are in Halifax.  Concurrent with his business career, Alex has been an Army Reservist since 1981, a role he started as a university student.  He first trained as an Artillery Officer and subsequently has performed roles as diverse as regional training coordinator, commanding officer of a reserve artillery unit, and United Nations Peacekeeper in Cyprus.  In his military role, he is currently the regional coordinator for the Canadian Forces Liaison Council - a group of business leaders devoted to supporting time off for training and operations for reservists.  Alex brings a unique perspective to the issues and challenges of people management and leadership.
