Absenteeism is a growing issue in most workplaces today. Management of employee absences is often challenging. This session will discuss the types of effects of absenteeism in the workplace and provide guidance on how to manage this ever-growing problem.
The session offers employers information on different types of absenteeism, the legal issues that arise with absenteeism, and advise on how to navigate these issues. Strategies for dealing with both long and short term absences will be provided, as well as information on how to navigate human rights issues that often arise with absenteeism.
Learning Outcomes
- A basic understanding of the legal framework surrounding absenteeism in the workplace
- An understanding of the effect of absenteeism in the workplace
- "Rules" for obtaining medical information and how to obtain appropriate medical reports
About the Facilitator
Lisa Gallivan, Partner, Stewart McKelvey
Lisa has appeared before all levels of court in Nova Scotia, as well as specialized tribunals. Lisa has worked with health care, municipalities, and small and large employers in all industries. Her areas of practice include: Labour and Employment, Employment Law, Labour Relations, Occupational Health and Safety, Workplace Human Rights, Workers' Compensation, and Pension and Employee Benefits.

IMPORTANT: Registering someone other than yourself? If you are a member and are registering someone else to attend the event, DO NOT log into the site to register. If the other person is a member, they must log in using their own member ID and password and register that way. If the other person is not a member, do not log in, just register them from the public area of the website. Registrations must be done online.
The registration deadline is Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at 12:00 pm (or earlier if the event sells out). Please note that registrations are not possible after online registration has closed. Registration cannot be purchased at the door.
Payment Terms
Payment is due by the registration deadline which is Tuesday, January 31, 2017 or within 30 days of your registration (whichever is earlier). Payments may be made conveniently online at time of registration by Visa/Mastercard or by cheque received by the registration deadline. Cheques must be received by the registration deadline (Jan 31) by HRANS at 84 Chain Lake Drive, Suite 103, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2. Registrations January 15th or later must be paid online at time of registration.
If paying online by Visa or Mastercard, you must have the billing address exactly as it appears on the credit card statement or the transaction will be declined. This is a security feature for your protection.
Cancellation Policy
A refund, less a $40+HST processing fee, will be issued for cancellations received in writing prior to Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 12:00noon. Those who make reservations and do not attend will be required to pay for the full session fee. Cancellations received in writing prior to 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 will only be charged the processing fee. Substitutions are permitted up to the business day before the event (for substitutions, the registrant must advise our office of their replacement in writing by 12 noon on February 8). Member/non-member rates will be applied to the substitutions. This cancellation policy applies regardless of date of registration. Registrations after the cancellation deadline are non-refundable.
