Purpose ought to be thought of as a three-way relationship between an individual's personal sense of purpose in life, the organization's purpose, and the person's purpose in their role at work.  When all three aspects of purpose are properly defined, are well aligned, and function in partnership with one another, then the employee, the organization, and society mutually benefit.  This session will outline strategies for individuals, leaders, and organizations to employ in order to create The Purpose Effect. 

 

About the Speaker:

Dan Pontefract is the best selling author of Flat Army and The Purpose Effect. Previously, as Head of Learning & Collaboration at TELUS, Dan was responsible for the overarching learning, collaboration, and leadership development strategy.  Dan's career is interwoven with both corporate and academic experience.  He is a renowned speaker and has been invited to deliver over 100 external keynotes and presentations, including a TEDx Talk.  In 2012, he appeared on the front cover of T+D Magazine and Chief Learning Officer magazine.  In 2010, Dan was acknowledged by CLO as a 'Vanguard Award' winner and is a two-time winner of the Corporate University Best in Class Awards of the 'Leader of the Year' in both 2010 and 2011.  In 2012, SkillSoft awarded Dan the 'Learning Leader of the Year' for his work at TELUS and CLO Magazine bestowed him the 'Learning in Practice innovation Award'.

About the Speaker:

David Fraser is a Partner with McInnes Cooper and is well-known as one of Canada's leading internet, technology, and privacy lawyers. He regularly advises clients - from start-ups to Fortune 100 Companies - on all aspects of technology and privacy laws.  He regularly provides opinions on privacy laws for both Canadian and international clients.  David also acts for complainants and respondents in matters referred to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.  

David is the author of Canadian Privacy Officer Blog and Canadian Cloud Law Blog.  His Privacy Law Blog was awarded a "Clawbie" in 2013 by the Canadian Law Blog Awards.

David is widely recognized as one of Canada's foremost authorities on privacy law and other legal issues associated with cloud computing.

The Role of HR Leaders in Disruption: Thinking Critically About the Changing Workplace

We are working in times that have been described as turbulent and uncertain and as characterized by disruption and discontinuity.  Trends such as globalization, that we thought were going to continue, are being challenged and values we hold as important are being questioned.  In this context, we need to be able to be resilient and flexible, demonstrate grit and tenacity and most importantly be willing to question and even let go of our taken-for-granted assumptions and deeply held beliefs.  Gareth Morgan, at York University, uses a metaphor of a "psychic prison" to highlight how as managers we may fail to challenge our assumptions about the world around us.  As HR Professionals and leaders, we need to ask if we are limiting our ability to respond, to challenge our taken-for-granted assumptions and think critically.  While saying we need to be "out of the box", it is sometimes not easy to see the box and the world views that compose it.

In this interactive session, Dr. Pat Bradshaw will facilitate participants to examine the complex emerging context of their work, discuss how we can become more adaptable in the face of external disruptions and explore how leaders can use critical thinking skills to address a current business situation.

Reducing Sick Time - We have Hacks for that!

In this session, a variety of case studies will be shared covering HR departments of various sizes that have taken on the challenge to reduce sick time in their organization by applying Change Management and Lean Thinking Skills.  Through the exploration of each case study, participants will not only learn about the strategies used by the organizations to reduce sick time but also walk away with the understanding of two practical tools that can be used to help work on any organizational problem.

Participants are encouraged to bring their smart phones to the session as we will be using interactive technology to keep you engaged and tailor the learning to the interests in the room.
