His passion for health and safety quickly grew as he assumed progressive leadership roles. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer in January 2012. Throughout his career, Stuart has come to know first-hand the impact of workplace injuries and fatalities on workers and their families. He is a true safety champion with an unwavering passion for preventing workplace injury.
Building Leadership Credibility with Employees - Concurrent Educational Session	2017-05-17	2017-05-17	9:15 AM	10:15 AM	2017-05-17 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM Building Leadership Credibility with Employees This session will discuss strategies and tools that senior/executive leadership teams can use to positively influence their relationships with their employees and address challenging issues head on. In this interactive session, participants will discuss the importance of seeing the organization through the eyes of frontline employees, and facilitating two-way communication to improve client service and organizational culture. The session will also look at the role of senior leadership in overall employee engagement and ways to engage staff in developing and executing strategy. Participants will also have the opportunity to consider how to apply similar strategies in their own organizations. About the Facilitator: Steve Ashton, CPHR Steve Ashton is the Vice-President People & Organization Development at the IWK Health Centre. Prior to joining the IWK in September 2008, he spent seven years in HR leadership roles with Bell Aliant, and twelve years as a partner and executive search consultant. Steve holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hon.) in Psychology and a Masters in Business Administration from Dalhousie University. He also completed Harvard University's program on Leading Change and Organizational Renewal. Steve currently teaches human resources in Dalhousie's Masters of Health Administration Program, and coordinates the MHA Residency Program at the IWK. He is the current Past President of the Human Resources Association of Nova Scotia, and sits on the Advisory Committee of Emerging Health Leaders - Nova Scotia. His other volunteer activities have been focussed on supporting youth innovation and career development, including Discovery Centre, Techsploration and Shad Valley.
The Role of HR Leaders in Disruption: Thinking Critically about the Changing Workplace - Concurrent Educational Session	2017-05-17	2017-05-17	9:15 AM	10:15 AM	2017-05-17 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM The Role of HR Leaders in Disruption: Thinking Critically About the Changing Workplace We are working in times that have been described as turbulent and uncertain and as characterized by disruption and discontinuity. Trends such as globalization, that we thought were going to continue, are being challenged and values we hold as important are being questioned. In this context, we need to be able to be resilient and flexible, demonstrate grit and tenacity and most importantly be willing to question and even let go of our taken-for-granted assumptions and deeply held beliefs. Gareth Morgan, at York University, uses a metaphor of a "psychic prison" to highlight how as managers we may fail to challenge our assumptions about the world around us. As HR Professionals and leaders, we need to ask if we are limiting our ability to respond, to challenge our taken-for-granted assumptions and think critically. While saying we need to be "out of the box", it is sometimes not easy to see the box and the world views that compose it. In this interactive session, Dr. Pat Bradshaw will facilitate participants to examine the complex emerging context of their work, discuss how we can become more adaptable in the face of external disruptions and explore how leaders can use critical thinking skills to address a current business situation. About the Facilitator: Dr. Patricia Bradshaw Pat Bradshaw is the Dean of the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary's University and a Professor of Management. She previously worked at the Schulich School of Business at York University and while there was the Director of the MBA Program and Chair of the Senate. Her research interests include the study of organizational power and politics, gender and nonprofit boards of directors. Pat's most recent research grants have been to study the diversity on Canadian nonprofit boards and governance of federations. Her work has been published in journals such as Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Organization Studies, Management Inquiry, and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. Pat has consulted with numerous nonprofits and some of her projects include governance, strategic planning, team building for boards and staff, and training programs on change management and critical thinking skills. She has the ICD.D designation and has served on the Boards of the Association of Researchers in Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Associations (ARNOVA), the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs, and Enactus Canada.

She develops strategies and leads projects to promote awareness and uptake of the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace and Workplace Wellness.

In this session, a variety of case studies will be shared covering HR departments of various sizes that have taken on the challenge to reduce sick time in their organization by applying Change Management and Lean Thinking Skills. Through the exploration of each case study, participants will not only learn about the strategies used by the organizations to reduce sick time but also walk away with the understanding of two practical tools that can be used to help work on any organizational problem. Workplace planning is an ongoing process that addresses workforce issues over time. Depending on the size and complexity of your organization, implementing gap closing strategies may take months or years. In this session, we will discuss how to achieve results by tackling the 'low hanging fruit' and mitigate potential risk. About the Facilitator: Detry Carragher, CPHR, CARVO Group Detry is an organizational development and change management consultant whose work extends to several of Canada's Top 100 Employers, Fortune 500 technology companies and Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada recipients. Detry has facilitated change in multi-million dollar corporations, the public sector, and small business ventures. She has served as an Appeals Adjudicator for Canada's Employment Insurance Program, as a Director of Human Resources for a First Nations Tribal Council, and as an HR instructor for a post-secondary institution. She has contributed insights to the Canadian HR Reporter, CBC, CTV, and she voluntarily writes a regular HR insights column for the Employment Journey publication. Warren Macdonald's life's boundaries were redefined in 1997 when he became trapped beneath a one-ton boulder in a freak rock fall during a climbing expedition.
