We invite you to join us for CPHR Nova Scotia's informative networking breakfast & panel - How Do I Begin a Career in HR?

This event will be a fantastic opportunity to hear from 4 speakers in various stages of their HR career, which will provide you with a greater understanding of the many options that lie ahead. It will not only be a fantastic opportunity to learn and ask questions, but also to network with top industry leaders and moderator, CPHR Nova Scotia CEO, Nick Beynon.

About the Speakers

Amber MacRoberts - MSVU Student Ambassador 

Amber is a third year student at Mount Saint Vincent University, majoring in Strategic Human Resource Management. She is at the beginning of her career and is on route to start a successful future in Human Resources. She already understands the power of the CPHR designation and the power of networking through volunteering to be CPHR Nova Scotia's first ever Campus Ambassador. As the CPHR Nova Scotia - MSVU Campus Ambassador she support the goals and vision of CPHR Nova Scotia by acting as a liaison between CPHR Nova Scotia and the student body and identifying opportunities to enhance the educational experience of their peers.

 

Kelsey Baker, CPHR - Human Resources Generalist, Halifax Port Authority & CPHR Nova Scotia's Rising Star 2020

Kelsey Baker graduated from Saint Mary’s University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Human Resources Management Certificate. She has over six years of experience in the human resources field and is currently the Human Resources Generalist at the Halifax Port Authority. Her role involves a variety of different HR functions including recruitment, compensation and benefits, employee training and development, performance management, as well as employee and labour relations. Kelsey received her Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation in 2020 and was the recipient of the CPHR Rising Star award. Most recently, Kelsey started pursuing her MBA and is actively involved with the Accessibility Standards Canada Technical Committee on Employment assisting to encourage inclusive participation of persons with disabilities at every phase of the employment journey. 

 

Melanie Wells, CPHR - Director of Human Resources, Great Canadian Gaming Corp.

Melanie has a BBA in Management from Mount Saint Vincent University and an Advanced Diploma in Human Resources from the Nova Scotia Community College.  In 2010, she joined the ranks of Chartered Professionals of Human Resources and is currently a member of the CPHR Board.

Melanie works with Casino Nova Scotia (CNS) – Halifax as the Director, Human Resources - Atlantic, and has been with the company for over fourteen years.  During her tenure with GCGC, Melanie has held various roles within Human Resources (HR).  Prior to working with GCGC, Melanie worked in the hospitality industry, starting on the front line slinging wings (those university and college degrees are not cheap!), and moved into a management position with a franchise following graduation.  She also held a few contract positions to bolster her HR expertise in between.  In total, she has amassed almost 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry (no math on this please!) and has a passion for both this and the field of Human Resources.  

 

Susan Thompson Graham - Head Instructor, Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management, NSCC

Susan is currently the Head Instructor of the Graduate Certificate (formerly Advanced Diploma) in Human Resource Management at the Nova Scotia Community College.  Susan created the H.R. program and continues to develop and teach a program which has graduated over 700 successful H.R. practitioners working in all facets of H.R. both nationally and internationally.   

Susan was recognized for creating a program that produces graduates who are industry ready and professionally competent from the Human Resource Association of Nova Scotia with the Peer Award of Excellence for her contributions to the HR field. 

Susan has her Bachelor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s University and her Master’s in Business Administration from Dalhousie University. Prior to joining NSCC, Susan had a successful career in H.R. in the public, private and para-public sectors, and has continued to provide H.R. consulting to industry for the past 25 years.  Susan is also a small business owner and volunteers her time with several community organizations.
