CHRP CPD Hours: 1.5
HR Competency: Learning & Development
Today's HR professionals have many tools available to enhance mutual understanding and co-operation, such as personality and other assessments. Yet, no matter how good the tool, it cannot do the job for us. Even the best candidate assessments should inform a hiring decision by no more than 30%.
In fact, any assessment instrument's full value lies in helping both the organization (to manage, coach, and mentor the person to his/her best performance), and the individual (to improve self-understanding that allows full cooperation with that process). The HR challenge lies in structuring the debriefing interview for maximum benefit to both.
Learning Objectives
- To structure a debriefing conversation based on the key features of each of the two major categories of assessments -ipsative and normative
- To provide a supportive claim in which the individual is able to gain maximum benefit from the knowledge contained in the assessment report/profile
- To use the debriefing conversation to set the employee - or candidate - up for success in the prospective role (new job, promotion, coaching, mentoring, etc.)
Who Should Attend
- Mid-level HR Generalists, particularly those who want to improve recruitment and retention interview skills
- HR Recruiters for whom the use of assessments in hiring process is new
- In-house HR consultants who need to guide operational managers through hiring and performance-management conversations on psychometric assessment results
About the Presenter
Carol J Sutton, Cert. ConRes, is a conflict resolution practitioner and mediator, and organizational communication specialist. She trained at the Justice Institute of BC and Boston University, College of Communication. Carol creates and conducts proprietary programs - classroom and online - in which people learn and practice skills to enhance cooperation and mutual understanding. In this process, she uses various psychometric instruments through which people may gain insight into their own and others' personalities and behaviours; e.g. the Strength Development Inventory ©, Thoman Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument © and the TTI © Behaviours and Motivational Values Preference Indicator (DISC). In addition, she is certified to deliver a suite of Profiles International ® assessments that are valid and reliable for comparing candidates for a position, and to coach and develop them to successful performance once on the job. Carol's first career was in marketing and corporate communication, and senior communications counsel, which formed the basis of CJS Communications Inc. which she founded in 1985. She has a Bachelor's degree in public relations, cum laude from B.U.; accreditation (APR) from the Canadian Public Relations Society, and is a Fellow of CPRS. Today, her special focus is on facilitating conversations and delivering programs that show people how to reduce misunderstanding and conflict, thus improving workplace collaboration.
