CPHR CPD Hours: 3.0
Culture is a key determinant in our expectations of respect and fairness at work. Conflict is often triggered by misunderstandings, assumptions, and beliefs rooted in cultures that are not reflected in the mainstream organizational culture. Culture is many things: the rituals we hold dear, the priority we place on things and issues, our religious and recreational practices, how were communicate, and how we respond to, and resolve conflict. Cultural differences are evident in a vast array of categories beyond the conventional issues regarding ethnicity, nationality, religion. Generations, genders, musical genres, regions, and job specialties also have cultural differences embedded in them.
This session offers an evolutionary perspective on fundamental human characteristics and how those are expressed by our different cultures. It introduces a new perspective on identifying common interests in dispute resolution. It provides basic tools to understand one's own culture-based responses to conflict and offers ways of opening one's eyes and heart to others' culture-based perspective so that conflicts can be resolved in a constructive way, based on common interests and fundamental human needs.
Learning Outcomes:
- A new (evolutionary) perspective on human interests and needs in conflict
- Heightened awareness of culture as a variable in conflict
- Enhanced personal awareness of one's own culture and triggers
- A basic understanding of a framework of cultural diversity
- Introduction of basic skills of working with cultural divergence in a conflict situation, utilizing an interest-based approach
Target Audience
All levels, and particularly beneficial to those who are responsible for managing conflict.
