Union Management Relations
A healthy relationship between management and a union does not happen by accident. This session will approach the topic of maintaining good labour relations from both a legal and HR perspective. The presenters will review the key ways to create and maintain a solid relationship between management and the Union. The discussion will include tips to manage the grievance process, avoid costly arbitrations, and strategies to help at the bargaining table. The presenters will also discuss the importance of regular communication and how to manage difficult personalities.

About the Facilitators
Ian Pickard, Partner, McInnes Cooper
Ian Pickard is a Partner in McInnes Cooper in both the Halifax and Charlottetown offices. He provides advice to employers across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in all manners relating to human resources, including hiring, discipline, and termination. He has successfully argues civil jury cases relating to both employment and personal injury before all levels of court in Nova Scotia, and has appeared numerous times before the Labour Relations Board and the Labour Standards Tribunal. He has earned a place on the Best Lawyers in Canada list for his practice in both Education and Labour and Employment Law since 2006.
Ian is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, and the Canadian Association Counsel to Employer (CACE). He is on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association Practical Study of Law in Education (CAPSLE).
Tanya Rowell, Director of Human Resource Management and Labour Relations, PEI Public Service Commission
Tanya has enjoyed a career in human resource management in the private sector and the provincial civil service and health sectors of Prince Edward Island for over 19 years. She has held senior level positions in human resources and labour relations, including her current role as Director of Human Resource Management and Labour Relations with the PEI Public Service Commission.
Tanya holds a BBA (Economics) and Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island, a certificate in Human Resource Management and has held her CHRP designation since 2004.

Payment Terms
Payment is due by the registration deadline which is Tuesday, October 25, 2016 or within 30 days of your registration (whichever is earlier). Payments may be made conveniently online at time of registration by Visa/Mastercard or by cheque received by the registration deadline. Cheques must be received by the registration deadline (October 25) by HRANS at 84 Chain Lake Drive, Suite 103, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2. Registrations September 30th or later must be paid online at time of registration.
If paying online by Visa or Mastercard, you must have the billing address exactly as it appears on the credit card statement or the transaction will be declined. This is a security feature for your protection.
Cancellation Policy
Registrations for this event are non-refundable. Substitutions are permitted up to two business days before the event (for substitutions, the registrant must advise our office of their replacement in writing by 12 noon on Monday, October 31). Member/non-member rates will be applied to the substitutions.
