Understanding the Complexities of Background Screening

In today's society, it is necessary for businesses to protect their companies as well as their employees, and perhaps even their clients. This has resulted in an increase in the use of background screening as part of the hiring process. Having a screening policy and process in place enables employers to make more informed decisions when hiring, and potentially prevent workplace risks such as theft, fraud, abuse, and violence. Screening programs can even protect against negligent hiring.

But background screening is very complex. There are many levels of screening and a wide array of services available. For someone outside of the industry (i.e. HR professionals) it can be overwhelming. As technology improves and information becomes more accessible the challenge surrounding due diligence increases.

During this 90-minute interactive session, participants will gain knowledge and achieve clarity surrounding the complexities of background screening as it relates to the hiring process in Canada.

Learning Objectives

  • Background screening options in Canada: Criminal Record Checks, Social Media Searches, Education Verification, Credit Checks, Investigative Reference Checks, etc.
  • Understanding Canadian Criminal Records: three categories of offences in Canada, examples of offences, police records versus guilty verdicts, disclosure, etc.
  • Understanding the need: fraudulent ID, fake certificates and degrees, modified criminal records, history of financial crises, etc.
  • Understanding the risks; occupational fraud, theft, corporate liability, compromised corporate reputation/image, inappropriate or threatening behaviour
  • Developing a process; enhancing the legal defensibility of the hiring process
