Senior CPHR Pathway

Experience Requirements

To qualify for the Senior Pathway, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum of 10 years of advisory experience in Human Resources.
  • Demonstrated depth of knowledge through 8 specific examples (highlighting the respective competency) where you provided HR advice and solutions at the advisory level.
  • Experience must span a cumulative duration of 10 years, acquired over the entire career.
  • Canadian experience is not required.
  • Must hold or have held a senior role.
  • A minimum of a university degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.*
    • *Where a candidate does not satisfy the academic requirement, CPHR Nova Scotia may waive it upon successful completion of the National Knowledge Exam (NKE).

Fast Track Route

Candidates may be eligible for a Fast Track route under the Senior Pathway if they meet the following conditions:

  • Hold or have held a senior HR role (e.g., VP of HR, CHRO) with executive-level responsibilities.
  • Have 10 years of advisory HR experience, with 51% or more of their time spent in HR.
  • A large workforce: over 250
  • Budget Responsibility in excess of $5 million annually
  • A large HR Leadership Team of approximately 5 or more
  • Submit the following documentation:
    • Senior Path Pre-Screen Questionnaire for approval: complete here 
    • Send the following to hello@cphrns.ca with the subject line as Fast Track Senior Application:
      • Resume
      • Organizational Chart
      • Job Description (if available)

If approved for Fast Track, candidates do not need to submit 8 competency examples nor the Senior VOE application. The Senior Path Assessment Committee will review the documentation holistically to determine eligibility.


Work Experience in a Senior Role

A senior role is defined as someone working 51% or more of the time in HR at the most senior HR level in the organization (e.g., VP of HR, CHRO), participating at the Executive/Leadership table with a high level of autonomy and decision-making.

Qualities of senior-level HR experience include:

  • Progressive and credible HR background
  • At least three years in the most senior HR position
  • High autonomy and decision-making authority
  • Budgetary responsibility and strategic influence
  • Experience counselling senior managers and leading HR teams
  • Authority to recommend on most HR decisions
  • Strategic thinking and execution
  • Strong leadership and ethical standards
  • Negotiating/influencing skills
  • Ability to balance strategic and operational issues
  • Deep understanding of business and economic environments
  • Authority and skill to design and implement succession plans

Complete the Senior Path Pre-Screen Questionnaire to assess your eligibility.

To gain your CPHR designation through the VOE, submit a completed application validated by your current employer. You must be an Associate member in good standing.

Application Deadlines:

  • February 28
  • September 30

Fees:

  • Review Fee: $175 (+HST)
  • Completion Fee: $375 (+HST)
    Fees are non-refundable and required for each application.

Notification of Results

Applicants will be notified by letter on the dates listed above. If unsuccessful, feedback will be provided, and candidates may reapply without limit once gaps are addressed.


Appeals

Appeals must be submitted to the CPHR Registrar within 30 days of receiving the committee’s decision. Appeals are considered only on the grounds of denial of natural justice or procedural deficiencies.
