Mentorship Program

CPHR Nova Scotia offers a members-only Mentorship Program. Many HR practitioners recognize the value of learning from others’ experience, and members working at the senior level are volunteering their time to ensure that the next generation of HR professionals are prepared to meet the changing needs of the profession and industries in which they work.

Our Mentorship Program is based on the CPHR Competency Framework, or HR Specific Competencies. Mentors selected for this program have a specific area of expertise within the functional competencies. Early in the program, protégés are asked to develop a learning plan linked to the same professional capabilities. Through this six month commitment, protégés are paired with a mentor who works with them to help them progress along with their detailed learning plan.

Participants in the Mentorship Program have the opportunity to share knowledge, access or provide ongoing career development support, and develop a standard of professional excellence. The mentorship program provides many benefits to both the mentors and protégés participating in the program, as well as the local HR community.

The Mentoring Program provides participants with:

  • Access to the ideas and perspectives of experienced professionals
  • Practical knowledge
  • Advice, coaching and feedback
  • Information on career planning (if part of the agreed development plan)
  • Encouragement and support
  • Knowledge of the HR profession, its possibilities, and practices

Our Mentorship Program has a formal structure, providing for the continuous growth of individuals within the professional practice of Human Resources. In order to determine initial and continued eligibility for participation, mentors and protégés will be required to (based on the current program):

  1. Demonstrate the threshold capabilities as defined by the HR Functional Knowledge Areas.
  2. Express their interest to participate
  3. Commit to working within the CPHR Nova Scotia Mentorship Program Framework including completion of a Mentorship Agreement, use of a development, regular contact within their pairing, including minimum 1-2 hours of formal mentoring meetings each month
  4. Participate in touch-point calls throughout the program to discuss how the mentorship pairing is progressing.
  5. Provide feedback on the program at its completion.
